Guest Blogger The Modern Sybarite: Sleigh Beds – Luxurious Sleeping Through The Ages
I’m thrilled to be a guest blogger for LuxuryObsessed! His posts on fashion, accessories,
places and all things luxurious, have always been so ultra chic, so when I was asked to
write a guest posting on design (my blog themodernsybarite.com focuses on art +
design + decor), I was ecstatic. Thanks for the opportunity!
The Napoleonic age of the early 19th century incorporated neoclassical design into all
aspects of life, from fashion to furnishings. Naturally this included bed design and from
this sprung what we know today as the sleigh bed; a design that cocoons the occupant
between a stylized headboard and footboard to give the appearance of sleeping in a
sleigh.
But while these designs have been tweeked for the 21st century and are quite elegant,
today’s hip way of luxury living is partial to a more streamlined, unfussy and clean
environment. Enter the Italian-born architect Pierangelo Sciuto, designer of the Aqua
bed, a type of stylized sleigh bed for the new century. The lines are sleek and elegant and
rather than having the feeling of being on a sleigh, one gets the feeling of being on a ski,
ready to make your jump from the top of Breuil Cervina. How obsessively luxurious is
this!

Another obsession: Ankasa Pillows. These sumptuously embroidered Belgian linen pillows have caught my eye for years and while we were updating our apartment I had been stalking the new outpost of Lillian August in the Flatiron district for weeks for just the right pair of Ankasa pillows for our grey velvet sofa: off white silk appliqué with sequins and metallic embroidery on herringbone Belgian linen. Voilà!
LongHouse Reserve East Hampton
LongHouse, the legacy of Jack Lenor Larson, internationally acclaimed textile designer and collector, is a multi-faceted tribute to arts, crafts and gardens. Encompassing nearly 16 acres of East Hampton's North Woods it is a stunning and inspirational sanctuary with outdoor sculpture and plantings of amazing variety. Trina Turk Pillows

I'd like to introduce you to the work of an illustrator I admire, Danny Snell. He is a very talented designer who has produced work for some of the biggest agencies in the country as well as large publications such as the Financial Review. I love the evocative imagery and clever typography. I haven't seen Danny for years but after chancing a look at one of his illustrations in a design book last week and then seeing him across a crowded supermarket over the weekend, I knew it was a sign I had to write about him. He's not only a brilliant illustrator, but a nice guy to boot!

I couldn't pass up the opportunity to show everyone this beautiful collage of pics devised by Bella Seven on Flickr. It's a real inspiration to see how Marie Antoinette has been depicted through time. The colours and embellishments are truly inspiring.

Pop-up Placemats
Look at these clever placemats from Publique Living in San Francisco. The concept is so simple but so effective. Each placemat is cut from 100% recycled paper and has an area that can be handwritten with the guest's name. They were exhibited at the recent NY stationery show so no doubt we will see them in Australia soon enough, but I just wanted to share this great idea with everyone now.

Not that I'm obsessed with it or anything, but thanks to the Bride's Cafe blog I've found another gorgeous calligraphy supplier in the US, Pretty Pen Jen. The best part is she ships all over the world, so if you're organised enough with your guest list, this would be an elegant option.

Penmanship Power
Ok, who doesn't love, love, love calligraphy? If ever you were going to use this incredibly beautiful art form, it would be for your wedding stationery. I have found the most stunning samples from a calligrapher in New York named Bernard Maisner. He boasts a high-profile client list and a repertoire of elaborate typefaces that he has developed himself.
Try contacting local calligraphy societies for suppliers here in Australia.

I have found the most stunning samples from a calligrapher in New York named Bernard Maisner. Flavour of the year it seems is Orla Kiely, a UK based designer. Her line has grown to include everything from fashion to bags, homeware and stationery. These divine purses carry her signature print and would make smashing bridesmaid's gifts - why not get one for yourself while you're there - they do ship internationally.

Lovely Liberty
Ever since I can remember I have adored these heavenly fabrics. It wasn't until I travelled to London and visited the Liberty store I truly appreciated its history. Established by Arthur Liberty in 1875, the first incarnation of the shop stocked decorative pieces, fabrics and objets d'art. It has since grown to accommodate furniture, fashion and beauty products. I can't help but adore Liberty fabrics and can think of a trillion ways to use them. Maybe it's my longing for spring, but these are a few of my favourites today...
